Find the connection

Recently I went to an art exhibition as hosted by the hotel which I am writing content for. They wanted me to attend the exhibition to write a short blog post about the event on the hotel's website.

My client was there in the event. Initially, he was envisioning something like a general coverage of the event about those who were attending, what the artist wanted to cover and the hotel's intention of supporting the local artistic development. But I figured it would need some more spices to make the blog more interesting. So I tried to interview the artist for more materials.

Artists and designers are quite a special breed. They are usually shy when it comes to fancy words about their work. They would rather let their work speaks for themselves and leave the experience of the individual who views their work to shine through as different interpretation. It was no surprise that my first attempt at talking to the artist wasn't fruitful. He redirected us to his art partner for more background information and swiftly moved away to talk with his friends and potential clients.

But I am not known for giving up so early, especially when I have a mission to fulfil and a personal passion for art. So I shadowed him and started slipping in questions as he was describing his artwork to an attentive participant. One good thing about the whole process is the authentic interest in the thoughts and feelings behind the artwork, which I have plenty of. Before long, we were talking in details about his inspiration and his trip to the Northern corner of the country where the artworks took place.

While checking around, I found one artwork that was inspired by the main design element of my client's hotel and was focusing on the artist's thoughts behind the work. And voila! I have gathered an interesting piece of information that would form the personal link between the artist, the decision to host the event: the same love with that design element, the shared love with art because the hotel is designed by an artist, and above all, the good intention of supporting the local art scene to give back to the community.

And my client was happy with the result, no extra revision was needed.

Another job well done. :-D
