The caring side of British Education

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

Recently I did a small interview with a State school teacher in the UK for my work. And it gave me a peek into the caring side of the British education.

She mentioned that in the UK, they only had two days to prepare for their students' homeschooling. And they decided to give students two weeks worth of homework, but without a deadline or marking requirements. For the most part, they didn't want to stress the parents out now that they have to become amateur teaching assistants for their kids while still working from home. The homework is more of a guideline for the kids to do some works at home with their parents.

Up until this point, my approach towards education, especially online education at the time of COVID-19, is always very student-centric. And parents are, for the most part, facilitators for their kids' education.

So this insight really opens up my perspective when it comes to Education in the UK. It is truly about caring, and not just for the students - the direct receivers of educational services, but also to the parents - the ones who truly have control over the education of their children, and also those who got hit just as hard with this global pandemic.

As the pandemic unfolds, how will the British education system weather the storm? I will stay put and continue observing.
